Title: The Lightning Thief
Author: Rick Riordan
Best For: Middle grades
My Take: Fantasy is not my usual genre, but given that I am teaching this novel to sixth graders in the fall, I thought it wise that I read it first.
The story begins with Percy, an average student with ADHD, who gets kicked out of yet another prestigious private school. However, while eavesdropping on his professor and friend, Percy uncovers a secret about his “half-blood” nature.
Once Percy learns about his family ties (which, include many references to Greek Gods and Goddesses), he sets out on a quest to return Zeus’s lightning bolt, which was stolen by…well, no one really knows for sure.
While on the quest, Percy and his 2 sidekicks encounter many adventures and even unveil some truths along the way.
I will admit, I learned a lot about Greek legends from reading this book and I think my upcoming sixth graders will enjoy it. There are more books in the series, which I’m not super inclined to read, but I am glad I branched out of my reading comfort zone!
